Niʻihau sits seventeen miles across the Kaulakahi Channel from Kauai, and it has been privately held by one family since Elizabeth Sinclair bought it from Kamehameha V in 1864 for $10,000 in gold. That purchase created what is still called the Forbidden Isle — a place most visitors will only ever see from the water.
The Nā Pali Coast forms the other half of the picture. Sixteen miles of cliff run from Keʻe Beach to Polihale, rising to roughly 4,000 feet, cut by hanging valleys that carry names still spoken in Hawaiian: Kalalau, Honopu, Nualolo Kai, Miloliʻi. These valleys were farmed in terraced loʻi for centuries. Nualolo Kai held a settlement occupied into the late nineteenth century, and its stone platforms remain visible above the reef. No road has ever crossed this coastline. A niihau and napali boat tour exists because the geology left no alternative.
Erosion explains the drama. Kauai is the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands at roughly five million years, and the sea has had time to undercut it. The result is a sequence of sea caves — Open Ceiling Cave, the Waiahuakua double-waterfall cave — that vessels can enter only in settled conditions. Basalt columns show the cooling pattern of old lava flows. Waterfalls fall directly into salt water.
Offshore, Lehua Crater rises beside Niʻihau as a crescent tuff cone, its walls dropping into water clear enough that visibility often exceeds one hundred feet. Hawaiian monk seals haul out along these shores. Spinner dolphins run the channel in pods of dozens, and humpback whales occupy the same water each winter. Green sea turtles feed on the reef flats.
The state manages access through Hāʻena State Park at the coast's eastern end, where a non-resident entry fee of 5 USD per person applies. Departures leave from Hanalei, Port Allen and Kikiala on the south side, with south-shore Nā Pali Coast tours running longer transits but gaining shelter from north swell. Air operators cover the same terrain from above on island-circle routes. Nā Pali landmarks such as Honopu Arch, which no vessel may land beside under state rule, are visible only from offshore. That constraint has kept the coast intact, and it is why the niihau and napali boat tour remains the defining way to read this shoreline.
